To be honest, the best solution for IRE would be for someone to release a system with a reasonably good tracker and an intuitive structure for building an offense with a good API. Have everything structured so that it's easy for people to say
if butisol then maidenhair
elseif weariness then asthma
else just read off this list end.
My system kind of does this but it's hard (and I'm lazy) to explain it to people when they have the attention span of a chimpanzee
How many people do you meet on a regular basis that just don't give a damn though? The great thing about Imperian combat now is that it is FAR more accessible than it has ever been. There's a really huge giant strong argument here for how dumbed down it's already gotten. The vast majority of people that teamfight only don't care about 1v1. Additionally, what profession doesn't have spammable damage to succeed in that environment? Are there really that many people out there saying "Man I know I stomp in teams with all my buddies, but 1v1 would be -really- sick."? Most of those people learn how to code and start asking the right questions. No, most of those people ask for free systems from 'good' combatants, then ask the wrong questions. Then, some few open a lua or zscript tutorial in their browser of choice and start asking the right questions. I guess my only point of interest and or question here is, how many people stop after realizing there is a bar to entry.
tl dr - There is a bar to entry to become a top level competitor in regards to clientside offensive coding and minor clientside defensive coding to manipulate autocuring. In what competitive environment is this not the case? Practice, practice, practice. Ask questions. If you are always losing fights but still fighting, you're on the right track. Take something away from every fight, win or lose. It really is that simple.
It is, and I'm having flashbacks to Zenigra going malig.
ETA: If you think the bar for entry to competing in this game is difficult, try a sport. Picking up zscript is laughably easy, even I could do it, and I am admittedly a horribad code monkey. I can't really see that I would enjoy any sort of competitive environment where the expenditure of effort required to increase your ability is not directly proportional to your success. Maybe I'm just being an overly vocal minority, which is most assuredly my go to thing on Impy.
ETA: Also I'm remembering being intelligent and not having change race change or gem, and bashing in dk with decay because holy **** I was unkillably tanky and holy **** the deeps.
Well, as intelligent with 19 int and level 2 collar and diadem,
<610/610h 640/640m 0B 0> <eb db> decay me You reach out with your withered finger and stroke yourself, who screams in agony as your flesh withers. H -113 [18.5%] [94] eq:3.60 <496/610h 632/640m 0B 0> <-b db>
That's less damage than anything noctu and nearly 50% slower; I wouldn't really present it as an actual alternative for diabolists.
I threw in a change for animation via classlead 72 to add a 'newbie/teamfight/intelligent' route that exchanges mana drain on deadeyes for health drain. It would go quite a ways in making the class more forgiving for people without affliction tracking, since doubling up on an affliction won't result in a complete loss for the round (just a significant loss).
EDIT: I know everyone is talking about old noctu; just pointing out that based on current numbers, I wouldn't recommend a newbie to spam decay in a teamfight
Daegger hunt damage scales with Int but not enough to actually matter. Might be worth looking into. Also, daemonite is currently useless, there is opportunity there to work in some damage.
Man, defiler has been a destructo-bot ever since the classlead beta. Azefel and I destroyed everyone complaining about it now with that whack crap. You kids are just really, really, really, really slow on the uptake. I figured dying being spam shield was an indicator.
@Garryn You can't make affliction classes more accessible without making them ridiculously powerful. If you work the other end and make it easier to track, you're flirting with super powering the affliction classes, because tracking is that much easier. I'm torn about providing a basic system. I think that's biased and the next thing that's going to happen is you're going to be coding the damage button for Khizan to mash in combat.
I'm serious, your better option is to suggest not affliction classes to newbies and let them ease their way into it. Affliction classes aren't for everyone, but they're definitely not for newbies.
Fair enough, so what can we do to make affliction classes more accessible?
Nothing, really. If you make afflictions easier to track, you don't make more B-list affliction fighters; you just make the A-list affliction fighters into A+ ones, because they're the ones that care enough about it to code all the checks and priorities and such.
The way you handle this is to stop making so many affliction classes. For a knight to be effective, they're a de facto affliction class, so the Demonic lineup right now looks like:
If you look over the metrics of the classes that are actually used, you are going to see some interesting results.
Of all the people in the game right now, I can think of ONE person who mains Renegade/Assassin(Ressnik). Two Hunters(Elrith, Kryss. Gurn doesn't play so doesn't count). One Wytch(Kanthari, who literally only uses this class beacuse they love glitter). One Diabolist(Vivianne).
Everybody else? Summoner. Druid. Defiler. Mage. Knight(and most of these dudes are straight damage knights or rolling fodder afflictions on a sabre). This should tell you something. Specifically, it should tell you that the majority of your playerbase isn't particularly interested in actually playing your affliction classes and you should maybe think about deemphasizing them instead of putting all that work into making an affliction class that a grand total of two people will actually play.
"On the battlefield I am a god. I love war. The steel, the smell, the corpses. I wish there were more. On the first day I drove the Northmen back alone at the ford. Alone! On the second I carried the bridge! Me! Yesterday I climbed the Heroes! I love war! I… I wish it wasn’t over."

The daemonite flies at you, poking and jabbing at you with its stubby fingers. H -43c [7.0%] [83]
Also, to be fair. At this point there are a lot of players with 2-5 classes who pk based on what they're feeling at the time, which is something to be mindful of. It's one of the things that sets Demonic apart. Khizan will yell at you to change professions, but will relent and help you figure out how to do the best with what you're currently in. See: Bathan.

I... know that. I was showing off my wonderful int-scaling damage at the moment. If you had told me hunt scaled from intelligence currently, I would have never believed you.
It's gonna be sad seeing that cute little guy on the wooden raft all the time
Why? I am sure the woodlings will lend him aid. >:(

If it's done before, it's because you're nice to your partner and want to make sure you aren't giving them anything you've caught from your various adventures.
If it's eaten afterwards, you think they had something.
