Mage is really interesting. There's already concerns about how balanced it is, but as with all new releases, everyone gets better at fighting against those professions later on and realizes that there are certain ways to cure and certain things to do to avoid being deadded. Trying to fight at higher levels now as Hunter is very difficult now for that very reason.

It's powerful when in the hands of someone like Kryss, but the bottom line is that currently, mage is far too complicated to grasp for 90% of people who have the profession.

So, besides making a guide and all that, my question is, how can we balance it so that professions are still good and complicated and fun for high tier professions, but still accessible for newbie and people trying to get into combat?

See, that's what we thought in the beta. That's not turning out to be the case.

Problem 1 is with icicles. It's an attunement stacking, sensitivity administering, damage relapsing newb button. (Something denied to intentionally Summoner)

Problem 2 Mage really isn't -that- hard. You can really only focus on two elements and just spam the rest of the way there. Kryss isn't doing anything nearly as complicated as Azefel and she's actually registering more success milking the you can't cure water attunement spam disrupt cow.

Affliction tracking as a mage is actually easier than other classes because the individual messages are there, especially the really important ones, like attunement.

I don't know why people still keep complaining that mage is 'complicated'. You don't really have to care about the affs, just the attunements. The affs are just there as buffer affs for attunements (since attunes are always cured after affs).

That being said, I won't value the opinion of someone, who couldn't work with knight, too much, when it comes to anything PK-related.

The problem with mage is not that it is complicated but that they spam lethargy, confusion and disruption and you can't build
an offense against that.

Ozreas' 3-Step Guide to the Mage Profession

First step: Crystalbinding: Choose something out of this skillset with which to augment every other cast. Your crystal will passively charge fast enough to support this with no worry of ever running out of charges, so long as you skip a spell between every use! Doesn't matter what you pick, as long as it gives an attunement or other herb affliction.

Step 2: Icicles: Now, each spell cast has two slots, "primary" and "secondary". The word you should fill in for the "primary" field for each cast is icicles. If it aint icicles, it aint dead.

Step C: ????: This step looks confusing, but it really isn't. Just pick almost anything else out of Pyroglacia or Terratheria that can be used as a secondary and slap it in the "secondary" field. Fantastic! Prime choices: knockout, suffuse, spray.

Congratulations! Now you're ready to reap the rewards of being an all-powerful wizard! With any luck, you've found this introductory course both educational and fun, and are itching to crush your foolish enemies, so get to it, champ!

Of course, much like Druid, the class does support more complex play styles for those looking for "challenge", "gratificatoin", or some other inane concept along those lines. Really, though, what's the fun in that?

You should check your healing priority. I just went up against Kryss for 10 minutes and set literally 4 triggers and two highlights, and I'm having no trouble surviving against her.

Knee-jerk reactions against new professions, seriously.

@Gurn - I'm not of the opinion that my, admittedly humble, ability to change affliction priorities after the first couple engagements with a new class to shut down most of the BS revokes my right to be sarcastic regarding those abilities.
